Crater Rim Cabin was originally built in 1949-1950 from clear 12 inch redwood tongue-in-groove, a material essentially impossible to obtain today. It was refurbished and refurnished in early 2001. Amenities include full kitchen, with microwave, smooth-top range, coffee maker, filtered water, and a nice selection of breakfast items, including freshly ground coffee beans! We are located near the summit of Kilauea Volcano at an elevation of 4050 feet, on the sunny side of Volcano Village. The southern end of the property is bounded by Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The elevation and trade winds give us a mild cool climate... perhaps 75 degrees for a hot summer day, and 62 degrees for a cool winter one. It is a little like perpetual springtime! At over 4000 feet, nights can be chilly... 45-55 degrees, depending on the season. We are even known to see a light frost maybe once every ten or fifteen years. The cabin is surrounded by koa and ohia trees, and many beautiful examples of the hapuu, Hawaii's endemic tree fern. Often, the apapane, an endemic Hawaiian honeycreeper can be seen flitting among the branches. The endangered Hawaiian nene goose can often be seen at the nearby golf course, or flying overhead! We often have wild turkeys and pheasants in the yard, as well. Of interest to golfers, we are situated a short walk away from the Volcano Golf and County CLub... a beautiful course with views of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Many spectacular hiking trails are available in nearby Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Automobile touring is great too! We still have molten lava flowing into the ocean, a truly unforgettable site! After a day of exploring the National Park, watch spectacular videos about the volcano on our TV-DVD. View some of our growing library of commercial film releases, or rent from a large selection at nearby Kilauea General Store. |
